Sonoratown Delivers Downtown's Purest Flour Tortilla Devotion

Charcoal smoke, lard-laminated Sonoran flour tortillas, and the finest costilla in the Fashion District.

Walk down 8th Street around midday and the unmistakable perfume of burning mesquite cuts clean through the exhaust of the Fashion District. Sonoratown has anchored this corner of Downtown since 2016, and while Teodoro Diaz-Rodriguez and Jen Feltham have rightfully expanded their footprint across town, the original DTLA storefront remains a sacred pilgrimage for anyone who understands that flour tortillas can be high art. The foundation here is Sonora-grown heirloom wheat flour, imported directly from northern Mexico, bound with lard, and rolled paper-thin before hitting the comal. These tortillas are blistered, slightly translucent, impossibly stretchy, and inherently savory. Wrap one around chopped costilla—flame-kissed grilled steak—or tender stewed chivichanga chicken, and you have something that transcends simple street fare; it is an exacting regional tradition executed with monastic discipline. Whether it is your first visit or your five-hundredth, start with the caramelo: folded, pressed, and layered with melted Monterey Jack cheese, pinto beans, and your meat of choice, then finished with a spoonful of fiery chiltepín red salsa or the cooling avocado crema. Add a Lorenza—a crisp tostada base holding bubbling cheese and smoky beef—alongside a charred cebollita. In an era of hyper-concept dining rooms and dizzying tasting menus, Sonoratown endures because it does very few things, but does them better than practically anyone else in Southern California. Grab your tray, claim a stool under the California sun, and remember why Los Angeles is the greatest taco city on earth.
